New artwork for bestselling course for Welsh learners

Y Lolfa has commissioned a young artist from Llannerch-y-Medd in Anglesey to redesign its bestselling Welsh-language course, Welcome to Welsh. First published in 1984, the book has gone through innumerable reprints and sold 75,000 copies. The new edition uses engaging new strip cartoons by Osian Roberts, making it ideal for self-study.

Osian studied animation for three years at Manchester Metropolitan University before graduating with an MA, also in animation, from South Wales University in Cardiff. He now works for the Rhondda Cynon Taf Language Venture as an adult education officer and is a keen Wales football supporter. He lists his hobbies as watching films, drawing, reading and listening to music, and dreams of creating a book with his own words and pictures – and also a series of films about Welsh history and social issues.

Osian said, “I’m pleased to have had this commission and glad that my work will help people learn Welsh – it’s great that it ties in with my day job too!”

Welcome to Welsh is available now for £9.99, including free audio files that are downloadable from the Y Lolfa website. Osian can be contacted on: [email protected]
